Dessa

Dessa is a rapper, a singer, and a writer. She's a renaissance woman in the truest sense. Dessa has released four albums that showcase her signature sing-song style with the Doomtree hip hop collective out of Minneapolis. Her latest album is called Chime. Her book, My Own Devices: TRUE STORIES FROM THE ROAD ON MUSIC, SCIENCE, AND SENSELESS LOVE was released this month. And if that isn't enough, she recently participated in a science experiment to map her brain! Recently, she and guitarist Matthew Santos joined us and an audience at the Goose Island Tap Room in Chicago for an intimate, acoustic performance and a conversation.

Dessa

Try to put Minneapolis-based performer Dessa in a box and you quickly run into problems. She's a philosophy student turned slam poet, a member of Minneapolis's hip hop collective Doomtree, and a lecturer in hip hop poetics. In an environment where many rappers and rap fans are quick to dismiss hip hop that mixes rap and singing, Dessa's three solo albums combine rap, harmonies, and unusual instrumental backings. She and her band stopped by the studio to perform songs from her latest album, Castor, The Twin. Dessa describes finding inspiration for songs on the city bus, and explains why rap lyrics are not just poetry by another name. She even has some advice for first time performers: If your legs are going to shake, best not to wear shiny pants.

Dessa Chime

Chime is Dessa's fourth full-length album, and the singer/rapper/philosopher has given us an album that is according to Jim“brilliant,”even name-checking St. Thomas Aquinas. Greg notes that the record explores how“women measure their lives today”in a world where getting through the day without incident is a win; and suggests that she's saying“we need to have a better world than this.”He praises the creative production, whether it's a sitar sample (in "Fire Drills") or a chamber pop cello solo (in "Velodrome.") Greg thinks Dessa's pop vocals are less unique, but concedes that they provide a“good counterbalance”to heavier themes. Jim says the record balances“self-empowerment and sensitivity.”Chime gets a Double Buy It from Jim and Greg.
